Lagos Shake: A Tony Allen Chop Up

Just bought Lagos Shake, an album of Tony Allen remixes. I’ve only given it one listen so this isn’t an album review, more of an excuse to blog about the album cover. Puts those pups you see cruising around with their bull terriers look distinctly pathetic. I’m glad I haven’t bumped into this guy around Camberwell after the pub.

The photo is from a series The Hyena & Other Men, by the South African photographer Pieter Hugo.

These photographs came about after a friend emailed me an image taken on a cellphone through a car window in Lagos, Nigeria, which depicted a group of men walking down the street with a hyena in chains. A few days later I saw the image reproduced in a South African newspaper with the caption ‘The Streets of Lagos’. Nigerian newspapers reported that these men were bank robbers, bodyguards, drug dealers, debt collectors. Myths surrounded them. The image captivated me.

Never been to Nigeria, but have been to Ghana a couple of times, the best sight I saw there was a guy cycling along with a TV on his head which was tuned into the football, wish I had a photo of that. I did get a photo of Miss Ghana UK though, yep, that’s Miss Ghana UK.

Was glad to see the Ghana elections went off peacefully, despite tensions after a run off.
