Mark Cavendish sprints to victory on the Champs Elysees

Missed the time trial on the penultimate day of this year’s Tour de France so the result was all sewn up before the final ride into Paris yesterday. A third TDF win for Alberto Contador with Andy Schleck runner up and winner of the maillot blanc.

Pretty thrilling final few hundred metres on the Champs Elysees, seeing Mark Cavendish absolutely fly past Thor Hushovd and Alessandro Petacchi was astonishing, he’s quite easily the best sprint finisher in the world and must be disappointed he wasn’t consistent enough to win the maillot vert this year.

All in all this has been a brilliant TDF, plenty of incident and, as yet, no doping scandal. I think the highlights for me were the battle between Contador and Schleck on the Col du Tourmalet on Stage 17, that crazy head butting incident with Mark Renshaw, the aforementioned Mark Cavendish victory on the Champs Elysees and Richard Williams’ commentary in The Guardian newspaper.
