I was really sad to read about the death of Gil Scott-Heron at the weekend, a true great and pioneer in music and, in my opinion, an absolute legend. It’s just over a year ago that I was excitedly blogging about the release of his last album, I’m New Here. Unfortunately it’ll be his last but he leaves behind a large and brilliant catalogue of music.
The Reveloution Will Not Be Televised put him into my consciousness, a song that I think remains brilliant both musically and lyrically which, whilst witty, delivers a very serious politcal message.
The revolution will not be right back after a message ’bout a white tornado, white lightning or white people.
You will not have to worry about a dove in your bedroom, a tiger in your tank or the giant in your toilet bowl.
The revolution will not go better with Coke.
The revolution will not fight germs that may cause bad breath.
The revolution will put you in the driver’s seat.
Here’s another favourite of mine.
