King's Cross Train Station

Ceiling of King's Cross Station

I had to travel by train from King’s Cross in London to Leeds a few weeks ago, shortly after the new departures concourse at King’s Cross was opened. It’s a pretty stunning piece of architecture designed by John McAslan.

The Shard by Renzo Piano

Shard London Bridge becomes the UK’s tallest skyscraper

The Shard London Bridge, currently under construction, has been crowned the UK’s tallest skyscraper.

The tower, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, outgrew previous holder Canary Wharf’s One Canada Square, which stands at 235m (771ft).

I live fairly close to the Shard and have been noticing the speed with which it has been growing over recent weeks.

Four photos of the Fernsehturm Tower in Berlin at night

Fernsehturm Tower in Berlin

Just been in Berlin where I took these photos of the Fernsehturm in Alexanderplatz. They are night time shots with different lighting configurations all taken a short time apart.

I really like this building, still one of the tallest structures in Europe (368 metres), it was constructed by the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) administration.

Burj Tower

Burj Tower

World’s tallest building opens in Dubai

The world’s tallest building has been opened with a dramatic fireworks ceremony in the Gulf emirate of Dubai.

The Burj Khalifa was revealed to be 828m (2,716ft) high, far taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101.

Known as the Burj Dubai during construction, the tower has been renamed after the leader of Dubai’s oil-rich neighbour, Abu Dhabi.

Last month, Abu Dhabi gave Dubai a handout of $10bn (£6.13bn) to help it pay off its debts.

Construction of the Burj Dubai began in 2004, at the height of an economic boom.

Clad in 28,000 glass panels, the tower has 160 floors and more than 500,000 sq m of space for offices and flats.

Holy shit that is insane in the membrane, 828 meters! That’s over 3 times the size of Canary Wharf Tower which is the tallest building here in London.

I love a tall building, the biggest I’ve seen are the old Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago at 442 m (1,451 ft) and the Two International Finance Centre in Hong Kong at 416 m (1,362 ft). They look pretty effin tall so this thing must look colossal.

Architect Rogers angry at Prince

BBC: Tuesday, 16 June 2009

The architect Lord Rogers has said he believes Prince Charles has broken the “constitutional understanding” governing the role of the monarchy.

Last week, Lord Rogers’ plan to transform Chelsea Barracks in west London was dropped after the prince told developers it was “unsympathetic”.

The architect told the BBC there could be “a dangerous political clash” unless the power of the royals is re-examined.

Clarence House declined to comment on Lord Rogers’ remarks.

I’ve been following this story over the past week with great interest and the behaviour of Prince Charles makes me extremely angry. (more…)

The view from my hotel room at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, near Happy Valley in Hong Kong. It’s a Great Hotel, and reasonably priced. The tall building on the left, the one with the illuminated spire, is The Center, the fourth tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong.

I lived in Hong Kong for a year and I love the place, I still have several good freinds who live there too.
