Bickham Script Pro Italic Ampersand
I’ve been working on a logo that requires an ampersand as part of the design so have been looking through different fonts. I like ampersands, and this is officially my current favourite, Bickham Script Pro Italic.
The other one I’ve been toying with using is Baskerville Italic. Seems like the italic versions of ampersands are much nicer in most cases than the regular versions.

The Pixies - Minotaur
Just read over at the NME that The Pixies are to release a new album entitles Minotaur, their first album release since Trompe Le Monde in 1991. I’m a massive fan of The Pixies but not sure how I feel about this, be interested to hear it but I get the suspicion it could just be some cash cow or publicity stunt. We’ll see.
UPDATE: Seems that is is actually ‘..a luxury collector’s box set featuring a wealth of material spanning the band’s entire career‘. Er, $450 for the Vinyl version.

Magnolia is a beautiful sight at this time of year. Taken in Ruskin Park at the weekend. Kind of reminds me of those old Japanese woodcut prints popular in the late 19th century.

England Football Shirt 2009-2011
It’s been a while since the idea of new football kits has excited me, partly to do with adulthood and partly to do with the fact that football kits are usually sponsor emblazoned, poorly designed and, quite frankly, crap. They just remind me of the bargain bin at JJB Sports or some other strip lighted, fiesta of polyester, shell suit stacked sports superstore. I do feel that there have been some classic football kits; Michel Platini playing for Juventus, or Pelé and the Brazil team in the 1958 World Cup both spring to mind. (more…)

Been looking at the website of Branislav Krpoilak, a Slovakian photographer. This particular image is taken from a series entitles Landings, which depict airplane landings at night, or at least the light trail of the flight path, there isn’t actually an airplane in any of them.

Landing no.06 (2006)
Some of his work, notably the Factories photos, remind me of Bernd and Hilla Becher, with the obvbious exception that they are in colour and are taken at night.

Future Map
Just ordered the wall wall map pictured above from The Future Mapping Company, a large emerald, lime, metallic and khaki version. I do have a wall map but I really like the designs of these maps which use cylindrical equal area projection which represents countries in their correct proportional size. Apparently, at 2 metres by 1 metre, the map is the biggest single sheet size available in The World.

Museo Sans
One thing I’m always on the lookout for are free fonts. This article over at the excellent Smashing Magazine lists some really nice ones that could be very useful. I downloaded several of them including the one used in the image, Museo Sans.

I Just read this really interesting article on a book published by Thames & Hudson, The Atlas of the Real World: Mapping the Way we Live. The maps in the book depict the world demographically. Both the information itself, and the way that the information distorts the maps, is fascinating.
Housing prices

World Map of House Prices
Thought this was a fairly topical one at the moment.
The size of each territory shows the total value of all housing, adjusted for local purchasing power. Western Europe contains the most expensive housing, while Africa and South Asia has the cheapest, even after allowing for the fact that money goes further here.
